Learning Objectives: Describe why 24/7 tobacco-free school policies are important to preventing youth initiation. Give five examples of avenues that can be used to get 24/7 policies in rural and urban schools. List 24/7 resources and guides that are available online.

Audience: Professional and volunteer advocates working to prevent youth initiation.

Key Points: Most people who smoke started while in their early teens, so the prevention of youth initiation is critical in decreasing smoking prevalence. Two important factors stand out when working with youth: 1) they are keenly aware of the hypocrisy of adults (do as I say, not as I do) and 2) they spend much of their time at school and related events. Creating a tobacco-free atmosphere throughout the school system is essential to preventing youth initiation. A 24/7 policy prohibits the use of tobacco in any form, by any persons, at any places, any time while on school grounds and during any school sponsored functions held off campus. One-by-one, nearly 100 Oklahoma school districts have adopted 24/7 policies protecting half of the state's student population. Panelist from urban, suburban, and rural areas will share their distinctive and successful strategies to pass 24/7 policies. Examples will include efforts championed by coalition and community members, adult and youth groups, and school personnel.

Learning Objectives: After the presentation and discussion, attendees will be able to describe the importance of 24/7 policies, list resources and guides that are available online, and give five strategies that can be used in their area to pass policies.

Benefits: These successful strategies and resources can be employed in other states. Just one success can lead to more opportunities and successes like in Oklahoma where one county has 100% of the school districts with 24/7 policies.
