Learning Objectives: Identify quitting behaviors associated with logging into web application as part of combined web-phone program

Problem/Objective: Many tobacco cessation programs provide quitters with either a quit line or a website. Much less attention has been given to integrating the two mediums. We developed and deployed a cessation program that simultaneously employs both phone- and web-based treatment with synchronous data transfer between the two mediums and encouragement to use both.

Methods: We tracked utilization rates of Web Coach (web application), call completion rates, quit status, satisfaction, and demographics of participants using the phone and web integrated program between 5/1/2006 and 12/31/2006. In addition, we surveyed 150 tobacco cessation participants on perceived helpfulness of Web Coach.

Results: Women are more likely to have access to Web Coach than men (55.4% vs. 44.6%). Of 7,978 participants with Web Coach, 3,636 (45.6%) logged in at least once. Those who logged in were more likely to take ongoing counseling calls (62.4% v. 56.2%) and to be quit for at least 7 days at the last call (48.5% v. 39.7%) than participants who did not log in. Participants who logged in were as likely as those who never logged in to set a quit date (96.6% v. 97%). Of 150 participants surveyed, 85% said the Web Coach content was helpful, 87% said the discussion forums were helpful, and 93% said the interactive quit plan exercises were helpful.

Conclusions: Initial results indicate logging into a cessation web application integrated with phone-based counseling is associated with increased call completion and short-term quit rates. Data on web use and quit outcomes will be presented.
