Learning Objectives: Discuss existing state based worksite tobacco control initiatives in Oklahoma and Wisconsin List employer strategies to implement comprehensive coverage for tobacco dependence treatment Describe the CDC Addressing Tobacco in the Workplace: Resource Guide
Audience: State Tobacco Control Coordinators, Business and Insurers
Key Points: Tobacco-use continues to be a seriously under-treated chronic disease. Sixty-seven percent of the US population receives insurance coverage from their employer, yet employers only provide comprehensive tobacco dependence treatment for 4% of employed populations.
To impact this, a number of states have begun working with employers and hospitals to improve coverage for tobacco cessation benefits and increase indoor air quality.
Wisconsin has produced an employer's tool kit which is being printed and distributed by the Manufactures' Association. Oklahoma has worked with the state as an employer to improve cessation benefit coverage and clean indoor air policies by using their quitline as a draw. These states will discuss their initiatives, what they accomplished, barriers encountered, solutions, and future directions.
Addressing Tobacco in the Worksite: A Resource Guide produced by the CDC Office on Smoking and Health, will also be reviewed. This includes an annotated bibliography, case studies developed by states working with business and samples of state worksite tobacco control materials.
Discussion with participants will promote sharing opportunities around strategies being used in their states or communities and other resources to address tobacco in the worksite.
