Using Internet Based Social Media to Achieve Tobacco Control Outcomes

Learning Objectives: List and explain 4 types of interest based social media popular with today's youth. Describe the steps needed to implement a successful internet based campaign for tobcco control Describe how to assess the effectiveness of an Internet based tobacco control project.

Audience: Tobacco control program coordinators, youth activists, or any tobacco control professionals, expecially those who wish to reach a youth audience (13-24).

Key Points: Internet based social media is one of the fastest growing and most common ways to currently reach the younger generations with a message. Social media describes the online tools and platforms that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other. Social media can take many different forms, including text, images, audio, and video. The common forms of social media will be discussed, with examples given of their use and evaluation in tobacco control.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to describe 4 common types of internet based social media. Participants will learn how to utilize internet based social media in tobacco control inteventions by viewing examples of past campaigns. Particpants will describe how to evaluate internet based tobacco control interventions.

Benefits: Participants will leave with a media understanding of internet based social media and how it can be applied in their tobacco control interventions. They will also leave with an understanding of how this form of outreach can be evaluated.
