Learning Objectives: Describe the process to successfully adopt and implement a 100% Tobacco Free Healthcare Campus.
Methods: Bucyrus Community Hospital was the first hospital in Ohio to adopt such a policy in June of 2004 and a study of their methods will be used to understand the challenges and benefits of 100% policies.
Results: The results of the adoption of a 100% policy are a reduction in the number of tobacco users among the hospital staff and raising awareness of the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
Conclusions: To successfully adopt and implement a 100% Tobacco Free Healthcare Campus policy, follow twelve steps. (1) Form a policy review committee including the CEO, the HR Manager and the PR Manager. (2) Determine the current policy in place. (3) Develop a new comprehensive 100% policy. (4) Determine and enlist to the committee advocates in your organization. (5) Determine the protagonists and understand their issues. (6) Determine how employee off campus smoking breaks will be calculated by payroll. (7) Months previous to implementation of the new policy, inform all staff, physicians and volunteers. (8) Provide tobacco use cessation classes and nicotine replacement therapy to staff at no charge. (9) Implement the policy with fanfare and invite the media. (10) Provide appropriate signage in the interior and exterior of all buildings and parking lots on the campus. (11) Encourage all employees to enforce the policy. (12) At monthly managers meetings keep staff updated on the policy and compliance.
