Michele E. Blake, BS MA, Sutter County Human Services, Health Division, Health Education, mblake@co.sutter.ca.us

Learning Objectives: Demonstrate tobacco cessation success with participants currently in a Drug & Alcohol Treatment Program

Problem/Objective: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Evidence suggests that the Drug and Alcohol Treatment community has a nicotine dependence that needs to be addressed.

Methods: Introduce a tobacco cessation program in collaboration with a wellness program to the Drug and Alcohol Treatment community.

Results: Sutter County Tobacco Control Program developed a comprehensive tobacco cessation curriculum entitled, “Step into Wellness.” The “Step into Wellness” curriculum teaches basic tobacco cessation, but adds essential basic lifestyle change strategies to encourage long-term cessation and a high quality of life.

Conclusions: Development of a curriculum specific to the target population supports cessation efforts and successes.
