Learning Objectives: Increase awareness on college campuses by promoting tobacco prevention and cessation among students ages 18-24, faculty and staff members who are disparately affected by tobacco.
Methods: According to Arkansas' Adult Tobacco Survey, statistics show that approximately 31% of college students are tobacco users and almost 40% of college students either began smoking or become regular smokers after starting college. The goals of the Oxygen Project are to: prevent the initiation of tobacco usage, enforce campus wide tobacco policy, increase awareness and access to the SOS quitline, and reduce the percentage of students, faculty, and staff members who use tobacco products.
Results: A tobacco survey is provided to collect data regarding student's awareness. To reiterate the mission of the project, a pledge card for a “Healthy Learning Environment” is provided to allow students the opportunity to pledge to support clean indoor air environments. Final results from the survey will be available July 2007.
Conclusions: Through this awareness campaign, the Oxygen Project provided information regarding tobacco prevention, cessation resources, secondhand smoke and the tobacco industry's marketing efforts. It also conveyed the importance of providing technical assistance among student organizations, student health staff, faculty/staff who are disparately affected by tobacco. A report to reflect the effectiveness of implementing a college awareness campaign in eliminating health disparities and final results will be presented at the time of the presentation.
