Off to See the Wizard: Editorial Board Meetings as a Key to Policy Success

Cheryl A. Ferguson, MPH, Policy Matters, cheryl@nmpolicymatters.com

Learning Objectives: Describe the essential elements of successful meetings with newspaper editors and editorial boards in support of a policy campaign.

Problem/Objective: A statewide coalition determined that it needed to get editorial support for a comprehensive clean indoor air law being introduced at the state legislature.

Methods: A “tour” of newspapers across the state was initiated. Newspapers in key legislative districts were chosen for contact. Editors were contacted and meetings with local advocates were scheduled.

Results: Editorials supporting the legislation were written in three key communities. These editorials were important to the success of the legislation and its ultimate passage in the state legislature.

Conclusions: Newspaper editorial board meetings are an essential component of a successful media advocacy strategy for policy change. Not only can the editorials be useful for changing the minds of policymakers and policy influencers, they can also serve as leverage to developing longterm relationships with the media outlet. Newspaper editors are not always the easiest people to connect with but developing the positive relationships can help establish your organization's credibility and value as a go-to resource for tobacco control issues.
