Expanding Leadership in Priority Populations

Learning Objectives: Increase knowledge and awareness of existing resources offered by the National Networks. Identify strategies to recruit local, non-traditional partners/collaborators representing priority populations. Identify at least one strategy to implement in his/her state to reach priority populations.

Audience: This panel presentation will appeal to any person or program working to reduce tobacco related disparities on a national, statewide or local scale. Specific communities represented will include African American, Asian Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Low Socioeconomic Status (SES), Native American/Alaska Native, and LGBT.

Key Points: The work of each National Network will be highlighted. Specific discussions will center on ensuring cultural competency of programs and strategies; identifying and engaging stakeholders who represent the community; building capacity in disparate communities and; a discussion of proven interventions and how these interventions can be tailored to a specific community. The panel will also discuss major initiatives of each of National Network and share resources available for participants.

Benefits: There are six national networks funded as part of the CDC/OSH National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) to address tobacco use in selected priority populations. This will be an interactive session with a focus on engaging in a dialog with participants as to how the National Networks are able to assist states, local coalitions and other partners with their disparities efforts. Emphasis will be placed on scheduling time with participants for further one-on-one consultations.
