Learning Objectives: Recognize tobacco industry strategic alliances. Understand how the tobacco industry uses strategic alliances to thwart tobacco control efforts. Understand how to counter industry alliance strategies, and/or use alliance strategies for tobacco control purposes.
Key Points: This session deepens the lessons of Tobacco Industry 101 by providing specific examples of how the tobacco industry protects its ability to manufacture and market an inherently dangerous product and attempts to thwart the passage and implementation of smokefree laws through strategic alliances with other sectors of society. We show how the tobacco industry undermines tobacco control through the creation, management and manipulation of relationships with other industries, the financial sector, labor, local businesses, taxpayer rights groups, professional organizations, etc. The tobacco control community needs to be able to recognize these strategies, and understand how they function and how to counter them in order to formulate and put into practice effective control policies.
Learning Objectives: Participants will learn to recognize and understand how the tobacco industry uses strategic alliances to thwart tobacco control efforts. They will learn how to counter industry alliance strategies, and/or use alliance strategies for tobacco control purposes.
Benefits: This session is intended to help participants improve their ability to design and implement effective tobacco control policies.
