513 - Smoking Bans in Bars, Restaurants, and Hotels

Paul McIntyre, Kids Involuntarily Inhaling Secondhand Smoke, paulmc@kiiss.org

Learning Objectives: Identify the states and cities that have smoking bans in and/or bars and restaurants, plus the hotel chains that have gone smoke free voluntarily

Problem/Objective: With smoking bans covering half the U.S. and major hotel chains like Marriott and Westin going 100 percent smoke free, the momentum for passing smoke-free laws is at its highest peak. Still, states like Texas have local bans but have been unable to pass a statewide ban. Florida has bans, but bars are exempt. Most bans are in heavily populated states - 28 states have little or no ban. Our objective is to educate and persuade all of them to pass smoke-free laws in the next two years.

Methods: Our method is to use peer testimonials and updated scientific information to dispel the most pervasive fear that going smoke-free will cause major business losses. We have three new DVDs (hotel, restaurant and bar industries) with these testimonials.

Results: Our testimonials from across the country demonstrate that smoke-free fears are unfounded leading to many hospitality businesses going smoke free either voluntarily or by law.

Conclusions: Peer testimonials are the most persuasive method of convincing businesses to go smoke free. KIISS's prior smoke-free videos were effective for advocates working at the local and state level. The momentum of the movement has already made these DVDs outdated. The new videos, available at the poster session, will bring everyone up to speed with current data and new testimonials.
