Preparing for an Online Submission

Your Browser

Browser Basics

If you are not familiar with the use of the Internet and browsers, we recommend you get acquainted with some "Browser Basics" at these sites:

Internet Explorer

Netscape

For AOL, use the Help function

If you are comfortable with browsing, then be sure your browser is configured correctly to handle JavaScript and page caching. (If you have a system administrator, tech support, or a help desk, they should be able to help you configure our browser correctly.)

JavaScript

To enable JavaScript or Active Scripting, see our help file on JavaScript Enabling. If JavaScript is not enabled, various functions and buttons won’t work. Normally browsers are configured to enable JavaScript, but if you have an older browser or high security settings (see your system administrator), then JavaScript might not be enabled.

Page Cache

Page caching is when your browser saves a copy of a Web page you have visited to your computer. The next time you try to visit that page, your computer may retrieve that saved page and display it rather than go back out onto the Internet and fetch a fresh page. Our software is very dynamic. We gather information when you submit or save it and redisplay that information immediately. If your browser is displaying saved pages, you might not see your changes "stick", because you will be seeing the same page over and over again. To configure your browser’s cache settings, see our Cache Help page. You might also experience the caching phenomena if you are behind a firewall and your system is using a caching engine. In this case, contact your system administrator, or submit your abstract from another location outside the firewall.

The Submission System

Information You Should Have Ready

Information you will need and should have handy is listed at http://ncth.confex.com/ncth/requirements.htm . We strongly encourage you to prepare your abstract text in a wordprocessor and use its word count and spellchecking capabilities before you actually paste in, enter, or upload the text.

If you choose to copy and paste or type directly into the text form, and you exceed the word limit or have a temporary Internet outage, you may lose whatever you entered. First try using your browser’s Back button to see if your entry is still in the form. AOL and CompuServe users should be aware that these browsers do not allow you to use all standard methods of copying and pasting. If one method does not appear to work, try another method. The methods are (1) right mouse click then Select Copy or Paste; (2) Edit-Copy, Edit-Paste functions; (3) using the Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V; or (4) combinations of the previous three methods.

HTML File Upload

If your abstract text contains many special characters or special formatting, uploading it as an HTML file may be more effective than pasting or entereing it. Most wordprocessors provide a function to save or export a file as an HTML file. If you are using MS Word 2000, we recommend that you download and install the HTML filter available at http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Msohtmf2.aspx and then export your Word document. The filter removes some HTML coding that might interfere with the upload.

Instructions for Submitting

Instructions are available when you begin a submission. You can preview the instructions at http://ncth.confex.com/ncth/help3.htm . The instructions also include a link to our Frequently Asked Questions file at http://ncth.confex.com/ncth/faq.htm .

If You Have Questions

If you have questions on the content of your abstract or on the conference's objectives, contact (e-mail: abstracts@tobaccocontrolconference.org; phone (301) 294-5664), and you will receive a response within 10 days. Questions on the mechanics of the online submission process should be directed to tech support, or call (401) 334-0220.
